COP George Dampare appointed acting IGP.

Commissioner of Police (COP), George Akuffo Dampare, has been appointed the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) by President Akufo-Addo.

His appointment to the high office follows the directive of the president that the incumbent IGP, James Oppong Boanuh, embark on a terminal leave effective from Sunday, August 1, 2021.

“Until a substantive Inspector General of Police is appointed, in accordance with the dictates of the Constitution, President Akufo-Addo has asked COP George Dampare to serve as acting IGP with effect from Sunday, August 1, 2021,” read part of the press release by the Office of the Presidency.

COP George Akuffo Dampare is 51 years old.

Dr. George Akuffo Dampare joined the Ghana Police Service 32 years ago as a constable without secondary school education.

In 1991, on completion of his recruit training, Dr. Dampare has adjudged the overall Best Recruit at the National Police Training School and won all awards except the award for the ‘Best Marksman’. Again in 1996, he emerged the overall Best Cadet for the 32nd Cadet Officers’ Course at the Ghana Police Academy (formerly, Police College) and won all awards, including Excellence in Professional Police Subjects and Excellence in Academic Subjects.

Surprisingly, he rose quickly in the ranks after completing various courses to become an ACCA chartered account.

A few years later, he graduated from IPS, now known as UPSA, and earned his Ph.D. in Financial Economics from King’s College, London.

Aside from his policing, Dr. Dampare previously worked as a Research Fellow and lecturer at King’s College London, University of London.

He also lectured at the University of Cape-Coast (UCC), Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Regent University College, and the Data Link University College.

He is also one of the pioneer lecturers at the Business School of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi.

Positions Held

He has served in many capacities in the service having previously occupied the positions of Director General, Finance and Administration, Director in charge of the National Patrols Unit, Director General ICT, Director General Operations, Director-General research and Planning, commandant of Police Command and Staff College, Accra Regional Police Commander, Director General welfare of the Ghana Police Service, and currently the Director-General in charge of administration.
