A New Era Begins for Red Bull as F1 Heads to Spa
Formula One’s Spa weekend marks a pivotal moment for Red Bull Racing and reigning world champion Max Verstappen as they compete for the first time without long-time team principal Christian Horner at the helm.
Horner’s sudden departure after a remarkable 20-year tenure has sent shockwaves through the sport, especially following Red Bull’s dominant season in 2023. The team’s new boss, Laurent Mekies, is stepping into a challenging situation as they head into the 13th round of the 24-race season.
The weekend kicks off with a Saturday sprint, which promises to add excitement and more points to the championship standings. Verstappen, who has been a key figure for the team, expressed his eagerness to work closely with Mekies, stating, “I was back at the factory last week to spend some time in the sim with the team and I’m looking forward to working closely with Laurent.”
Currently, Red Bull sits fourth in the constructors’ standings, while Verstappen trails behind McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris in the drivers’ championship. The intra-team rivalry at McLaren adds an extra layer of intrigue, as Norris aims for a third consecutive victory, which would be a first for him, and an opportunity to take the lead in the standings.
Piastri, who narrowly missed out on a win in Britain due to a 10-second penalty, is eager to bounce back as the series transitions to a double-header with the Belgian and Hungarian Grands Prix.
George Russell, facing uncertainty about his future at Mercedes, is also motivated as he looks to prove his worth. The Briton was stripped of a victory at Spa last year due to post-race checks that revealed his car was underweight, a moment that remains a sore spot in his career.
Ferrari has yet to secure a victory since Lewis Hamilton’s move from Mercedes to the Italian team, but they are gaining momentum. Charles Leclerc has earned three podiums in the last five races, while Hamilton finished fourth at Silverstone, still seeking his first win with Ferrari.
Nico Hulkenberg, who recently achieved his first podium finish after 239 attempts, is set to continue his journey with Sauber, which is preparing to transition into the Audi works team.
