Ghana Link Refutes Claims of Non-Operational Weighbridges Under ICUMS

Ghana Link Network Services Ltd has dismissed claims published by the Daily Graphic on its X (formerly Twitter) page regarding the operational status of weighbridges under the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS) at Tema Port.

The report, which suggested that the system was “non-operational” during the recent visit of Roads and Highways Minister, Kwame Governs Agbodza, and Transport Minister, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, is “inaccurate and misleading,” the company said in a statement on Wednesday, February 26, 2025.

According to Ghana Link, the weighbridges were fully operational at the time of the ministers’ visit. It clarified that Hon. Nikpe’s inquiries were not about system functionality but enforcement, as he observed that some trucks were bypassing the weighbridges.

“The weighbridge process is currently in a piloting phase, which accounts for why certain trucks are not yet required to pass through,” the company noted. “This phased implementation is designed to ensure a smooth transition and maintain efficiency at the port.”

Ghana Link further stated that Customs is engaging with the Ghana Highway Authority and Port Authorities to establish a data-sharing mechanism for axle weight compliance, which will come into full effect once the system is fully operational.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and regulatory compliance within Ghana’s trade and logistics sector and urged media outlets to adopt fact-based reporting to prevent public misperception of national infrastructure projects.
