Accountability for Black Stars’ Budget Lies with Sports Ministry not GFA – EXCO Member
Nana Oduro Sarfo, a member of the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has responded to President John Dramani Mahama’s recent comments regarding budget accountability for the Black Stars. Sarfo insists that the president has been misinformed about the financial responsibilities related to the national team.
During his State of the Nation Address, President Mahama emphasized the need for transparency in how government funds are allocated to national teams, calling for the Sports Ministry to hold the GFA accountable as Ghana prepares for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
However, Sarfo contested this assertion in an interview with Connect 97.1 FM, stating, “The GFA does not spend on the Black Stars. The FA submits the budget for approval, and once approved, the Ministry handles all financial matters.” He highlighted that the GFA’s role is primarily to propose a budget, which is then managed by the Sports Ministry.
Ghana is set to face Chad in Accra on March 21 and will travel to Morocco to take on Madagascar on March 24 as part of their World Cup qualifying campaign.
