AFCON 2021: End Ghana’s 40-year drought – Prez Akuffo Addo to Black Stars

The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, has charged the Black Stars to end the nation’s 40 year wait for an African Cup of Nations trophy by winning the competition in Cameroon this year.

While Ghana are not among the top favourites to win the cup, the Black Stars are still considered one of the best football teams on the continent because they have won the tournament on four times.

However, the President is full of belief that with the quality the current team, the Black Stars can be able to end the title drought this year.

In a message to the team ahead of their opening match today, Nana Akufo-Addo wished the team well and urged them to meet the very expectations of Ghanaians by putting up a performance in Cameroon.

“On the eve of the 2021 AFCON, I send best wishes from all Ghanaians to you, the playing, technical and management teams of the senior national football side, the Black Stars. We’re all happy that the AFCON 2021 tournament is going to be held, the coronavirus pandemic notwithstanding.

“Like with every other edition of the AFCON, the Ghanaian people demand nothing short of ultimate glory from the Stars. The pressure to succeed is understandably high because of our status as four-time winners and also because it has been 40 long years since we last lifted the trophy.

“The target for you naturally is to bring the cup home. We have to go a step further than the second places recorded in 1992, 2010 and 2015 and bring the 40-year drought to an end. The task may be daunting but it is certainly not insurmountable to match any of the best teams on the continent.

“I believe that in the current crop of players we have the talent to match any of the best teams on the continent,” Nana Addo said.

The Stars begin their campaign with an opening group C match against North African giants Morocco 4pm today.
