African Capacity Building Foundation, VALD Ghana Set To Launch Innovative Tobacco Control Data Hub In Ghana

The African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) in collaboration with the Vision for Alternative Development (VALD) Ghana, is set to launch a comprehensive knowledge and data hub dedicated to issues of tobacco control in Ghana.

The project is expected to build capacity and support the government in fulfillment of some of the commitments it has made to the WHO FCTC particularly the enforcement of the existing tobacco control policies.

This will be achieved through the creation of a dedicated resource hub as a “one-stop platform”/knowledge hub where all resources pertaining to tobacco control in Ghana and beyond will be kept for the purposes of research, references, and learning.

Labram Musah, the Executive Director in charge of programs at VALD Ghana in a keynote address to various stakeholders in the tobacco control industry, described the web-based platform as an innovative resource as it will house all information on tobacco control in Ghana, and by extension, Africa and the global level.

The Knowledge Resource Platform (KRP) is a centralized digital platform/website designed to collect, store, manage, and disseminate information, data, and resources related to a specific field or subject area.

The platform will also serve as a hub for research, references, and learning, and will also report violations of tobacco control policies in Ghana and Africa, with a focus on enhancing the effectiveness of child control measures.

Generally, the KRP will help to improve monitoring and reporting of tobacco control violations, enhance research and learning, improve policy compliance monitoring, and also provide centralized data management.

Established in 1991, the ACBF is the African Union’s Specialized Agency for capacity development in Africa and has offices in Accra, Harare, and Nairobi.  The ACBF works to build strategic partnerships, extend grants, offer technical support, and provide access to relevant knowledge related to capacity building in Africa.
