African Games 2023: Ghana set up final against Nigeria in women’s football competition

Ghana will face Nigeria in the final of the women’s football competition at the ongoing African Games following their respective wins on Monday.

Nigeria booked their place in the final of the competition following their 2-0 win over Uganda earlier in the day.

The two teams squared off at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium in what was expected to be a keenly contested game. However, it was all Nigeria for the majority of the game as they claimed a vital win.

The Black Princesses then took their turn as they came up against Senegal, a team they faced en route to booking a place in the upcoming U-20 Women’s World Cup. Ghana claimed a 3-1 win to also book a final ticket.

Tracey Twum scored her second goal of the tournament, giving Ghana the lead after just 18 minutes played.

Ophelia Serwaa Amponsah doubled the lead on the stroke of halftime as her cheeky effort from a swift counterattack beat the Senegalese goalkeeper, making it 2-0.

The Teranga Lionesses were given a lifeline minutes into the second half as they scored from the penalty box.

The two-goal lead was restored shortly for Yusif Basigi’s side with Amponsah scoring from a rebound to record a brace in the game.

The result also sees Ghana advance to the final with an opportunity to fight for the gold medal against Nigeria, a team they beat in the final of the WAFU B U-20 Girls Cup last year in Kumasi.

The final is set for Thursday, March 21, at the Cape Coast Stadium.
