Angola Coach Dismisses Ghana’s AFCON Chances as “Low to Impossible”

Angola Coach Dismisses Ghana’s AFCON Chances as “Low to Impossible”

In a bold statement that could reverberate through the football world, Angola’s head coach, Pedro Goncalves, has declared that Ghana’s chances of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) are “low to impossible.”

This assessment comes as a heavy blow to the Black Stars, whose hopes of participating in the prestigious tournament are rapidly fading.

Goncalves’ comments reflect the current state of Ghana’s performance in the qualifiers, where the four-time African champions have struggled to find their footing. The Black Stars are winless in their last four matches, managing to secure only two points out of a possible 12. This lackluster run has left them languishing in third place in Group F, trailing behind Angola and Sudan, who are now seen as the favorites to advance.

“While Ghana is undoubtedly a strong contender, their chances of qualifying are low to impossible at the moment,” Goncalves remarked, highlighting the stark reality facing the once-mighty team.

As they prepare for a crucial encounter against Angola in Luanda this Friday, the Black Stars find themselves in dire straits. Angola, boasting a perfect record of four wins from four matches, is eager to maintain their momentum and solidify their automatic qualification for the tournament. The stakes are high for both teams, but for Ghana, the situation is particularly precarious.

The Black Stars must claim victory in their remaining qualifiers against Angola and Niger to have any chance of advancing. Additionally, they will need Sudan to lose both of their matches against Niger and Angola. The combination of results needed feels daunting, making the path to qualification increasingly complex.

For Ghana, not qualifying for the AFCON would mark a catastrophic low, as it would be the first time in two decades that the nation has absent from Africa’s premier football tournament. The weight of history and expectations hangs heavily on the team as they prepare for what could be a defining match.
