Asaase Radio’s Emmanuel Aboagye-Wiafe maintains dominance in energy reporting, wins International Nuclear Energy Award in Russia

The host of Asaase Radio’s flagship energy programme Energy 101 Emmanuel Aboagye Wiafe, has emerged as one of two Africans honoured by the Russia State Atomic Energy Corporation (ROSATOM) for professional excellence in energy reporting on the African continent.

The latest international award is the third in succession after Aboagye-Wiafe won the Media Personality of the Year at the Think Energy SDG Awards in Accra in June 2023 and the Best Energy Reporter at the 2023 Ghana Energy Awards.

These awards undoubtedly cement Asaase Radio’s dominance in reporting on the energy sector over the last four years.

Aboagye-Wiafe received the award on the sidelines of the 24th edition of the international Atomexpo held in Sochi Russia.

“I was overwhelmed with joy and shocked when my name was mentioned at the Global Dinner Awards Night as a recipient of this prestigious award which was jointly won by Eric Kipkorir Biegon, multimedia journalist from Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC)” Aboagye Wiafe said.

The ceremony honoured journalists who have distinguished themselves in the field of nuclear energy reporting across the world.

The two African journalists were selected out of many global energy journalists who were sponsored by Rosatom to participate in the 2024 Atomexpo in Russia on the 25 to 26 March 2024

“This indeed is the pinnacle of my career in journalism and receiving an international award for professionalism in nuclear energy reporting by Rosatom, is a pleasant privilege”, he said

“It’s so special especially following two earlier local recognitions in June and November 2023 at the Think Energy Awards and the Ghana Energy Awards in Accra.”

Emmanuel Aboagye Wiafe said the awards present an opportunity to further stamp his feet in the global energy space and will not hesitate to impart the knowledge acquired to his younger colleague journalists at the workplace.

He encouraged younger journalists to specialise and strive to become masters in various fields encouraging them not to shy away from energy reporting.

“I never thought I could comprehend and communicate issues of energy and related matters effectively maybe because I never did any core science subjects. However, I took a keen interest in energy stories after Ghana discovered oil and gas in 2007 and later followed attentively the global debate on energy transition and renewable energy advocacy. I read and try to get information every day in these areas and it pays off,” he stated.

Aboagye-Wiafe was grateful to the board chairman of Asaase Broadcasting Company Ltd, Gabby Otchere Darko and a board member Kojo Mensah for playing instrumental roles in designing and getting him to host the Energy 101 programme on Asaase radio.

He said that has become the source of his profound interest in energy reporting.

“I also want to thank the CEO of Asaase, George Andah for the moral support and the entire team members of the Elizabeth Ohene newsroom at Asaase Radio.”

Proud moment

On his part the CEO of Asaase Broadcasting Company Ltd, George Nenyi Andah said, “. . . As one of only two Africans honoured, his achievement underscores not only his exceptional talent but also his dedication to excellence in energy reporting across the African continent.”

“This recognition reaffirms our commitment to fostering a culture of excellence and innovation within our organization, and we congratulate Emmanuel on this well-deserved honour,” he said.

Energy 101 has been airing on Asaase Radio on Monday evenings since 2020. It has become the most listened-to programme by industry players and the public who desire to equip themselves with contemporary developments in the world of energy.

The programme has since its inception focused on the global petroleum and energy sector developments, emphasising among others, the efficient management of Africa’s hydrocarbon resources, helping to deal with the continent’s energy poverty and exploring effective renewable energy solutions to achieve a just energy transition in Africa. It is sponsored by the Bui Power Authority (BPA).
