Lionel Messi Calls for Increased Spending in MLS to Foster Growth
Soccer legend Lionel Messi has shared his vision for the future of Major League Soccer (MLS), advocating for the removal of spending restrictions to enhance the league’s growth. In a recent interview with NBC Nightly News, the Inter Miami forward expressed that every team should have the freedom to sign players without limitations.
“Every team should have the opportunity to bring in players and sign whoever each team wants without limitations or rules for players to bring them in,” Messi stated when asked what he would do if he were the league’s commissioner for a day. He believes that lifting these restrictions could attract more high-profile players to the league, significantly contributing to its development in the United States.
Messi’s comments come amid ongoing discussions about the league’s salary cap and other regulations designed to control team spending. The Argentine superstar, who commands a salary of $20.44 million—more than double that of his teammate Sergio Busquets—argued that many clubs lack the financial power to make significant signings under the current system.
“I think that growing soccer in the United States is possible,” Messi said. “There are still big changes to be made so that teams can continue to grow, but there is a very important foundation in place where teams are prepared and want that growth.”
As Inter Miami prepares for their first-round playoff match against Nashville SC, where they currently lead the series 1-0, Messi remains optimistic about the club’s future. He emphasized the strength of the Inter Miami brand both domestically and internationally, noting, “The club made a huge change and grew in every way, both athletically and institutionally.”
Messi’s advocacy for increased spending in MLS marks a significant moment in his relationship with the league, as he holds a minority ownership stake in Inter Miami and benefits from revenue-sharing deals with partners like Apple and Adidas.
