GSE Market Capitalisation Rises by GHS 176.7m as Benchmark Indices Advance

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) extended its upward momentum on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, as sustained buying interest in key equities pushed benchmark indices to a higher close.

The GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) advanced by 0.17 per cent to close at 8,721.73 points, compared with 8,706.79 points at the previous session. This lifted the year-to-date return on the benchmark index to 78.41 per cent. The Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) also recorded a stronger gain, rising by 0.45 per cent to 4,583.21 points, pushing its year-to-date performance to 92.51 per cent.

Reflecting the positive market performance, total market capitalisation increased by GH¢176.68 million to close at GH¢168.69 billion, underscoring renewed investor confidence amid broad-based participation in selected counters.

Trading activity remained robust, with total volume traded rising by 4.67 per cent to 4.83 million shares. However, the total value of shares traded declined sharply by 66.26 per cent to GH¢6.61 million, compared with GH¢19.58 million recorded in the previous session, largely due to the absence of large-value block trades.

On the price movers’ board, CAL Bank emerged as one of the top gainers, appreciating by GH¢0.04 to close at GH¢0.58, while GCB Bank gained GH¢0.07 to end the session at GH¢19.58. NewGold ETF (GLD) was the sole decliner, shedding GH¢3.29 to close at GH¢489.02.

Telecommunications stocks dominated market turnover, with MTN Ghana leading activity after recording a total trade value of GH¢4.03 million from 960,269 shares exchanged. CAL Bank also posted significant volumes, with over 3.81 million shares traded during the session.

Market analysts note that the continued strength in the financial and telecom sectors has been a key driver of the GSE’s strong year-to-date performance, with investor sentiment remaining largely positive heading into the final weeks of the year.
