Bank of Ghana Governor to Face Parliament Over $280M New Headquarters Project
The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Johnson Asiama, is set to appear before Parliament on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, to address concerns regarding the construction of the central bank’s new headquarters.
The decision follows a request made by Members of Parliament from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in August 2023, seeking clarity on the project’s financing, cost implications, scope, and completion timeline.
Parliament Demands Transparency
Speaking in Parliament, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga emphasized the need for transparency, insisting that the BoG leadership must justify the necessity and pricing of the project.
“At the committee meeting, we resolved that next Wednesday, we will invite the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, as an independent constitutional entity, to brief this house on the pricing of the new headquarters. We want to understand how the price variations occurred, how quantities were determined, and the justification for the necessity of a new BoG headquarters,” Mr Ayariga stated.
Backdrop of the Inquiry
The scrutiny over the central bank’s new building follows the inauguration of Bank Square, the BoG’s newly built headquarters, by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on November 20, 2024.
The upcoming parliamentary appearance is expected to provide further details on the project’s cost structure, amid growing concerns over public expenditure and fiscal discipline.
