Barcelona to Continue Playing at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys Until New Year
Barcelona has confirmed that they will remain at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys until after the New Year, citing a UEFA rule as a significant factor. The club is currently undergoing a £1.25 billion renovation project to expand the capacity of their iconic Spotify Camp Nou to 105,000 seats, following their LaLiga title win in June 2023.
Originally, Barcelona planned to return to the Camp Nou for their 125th anniversary on November 29, but last month they acknowledged a delay. In a statement to supporters, the club emphasized that UEFA regulations, which prevent teams from switching stadiums during the initial phase of the Champions League, have influenced their decision.
The Champions League’s initial phase will run until the end of January, with Barcelona set to host Atalanta on January 29. The club also mentioned the logistical challenges and costs associated with maintaining two large venues simultaneously as reasons for postponing their return to the Camp Nou.
As a result, upcoming matches against Valencia and Alavés in La Liga, as well as the Champions League clash with Atalanta, will take place at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. The home match against Valencia is scheduled for January 26, while they will host Alavés on February 2.
While an official date for their return to the Camp Nou has yet to be confirmed, it is possible that their first match back could be against Rayo Vallecano on the weekend of February 16. Additionally, a Champions League play-off match could also be included, depending on their league performance.
Barcelona has adjusted ticket prices for the remaining matches at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys as fans await their return to the renovated Camp Nou.
