Jasmine Paolini Claims Italian Open Title, Defeats Gauff in Final

Jasmine Paolini made history by becoming the first Italian woman to win the Italian Open in 40 years, defeating American Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-2 in a commanding final on Saturday.

Paolini’s victory marks her second WTA 1000 title, adding to her success at the Dubai Championships last year. The 29-year-old from Tuscany thrilled the home crowd at Foro Italico, delivering a performance that showcased her skill and determination as she gears up for the upcoming French Open, where she was a runner-up last year.

With the support of an enthusiastic local audience, Paolini started strong, clinching a tightly contested opening set in 54 minutes. She then elevated her game, racing to a 3-0 lead in the second set before sealing the match. Gauff, the world number three and 2023 U.S. Open champion, struggled to find her rhythm, committing 55 unforced errors throughout the match.

Despite the loss, Gauff had a successful tournament, defeating notable players like Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen and former U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu on her way to the final. After the match, Gauff congratulated Paolini, acknowledging her impressive achievement and wishing her luck in the upcoming doubles final, where Paolini will partner with Sara Errani.

Paolini’s triumph not only adds a prestigious title to her resume but also strengthens her confidence as she prepares for the challenges ahead in the clay season.

With her eyes set on further success, both players look forward to competing at the French Open, starting on May 25.
