Prof. Bokpin Welcomes Mahama’s Pledge to Fix Economy, Calls it a “Hopeful Commitment”

Finance and Economics professor at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), Professor Godfred Bokpin, has described President John Dramani Mahama’s recent pledge to fix Ghana’s economic challenges as a refreshing and reassuring commitment.

Speaking on Joy FM on Friday, Prof. Bokpin stated that President Mahama’s bold declaration signals leadership and personal responsibility in addressing the country’s financial difficulties.

“In fact, the President said, ‘I will fix it,’ and for me, that gives hope,” he noted. “It is a demonstration of leadership taking ownership of the crisis, which is essential in times like these.”

President Mahama, in his State of the Nation Address on Thursday, February 27, accused the Akufo-Addo administration of plunging the economy into distress but assured Ghanaians that he would restore stability and growth.

Prof. Bokpin compared the current economic situation to that of 2017 when President Mahama handed over to the Akufo-Addo administration, highlighting that while both governments faced economic challenges, their commitment to resolving them has remained evident.

He dismissed suggestions that Mahama’s address was a mere lamentation, stating instead that it provided a clear and actionable plan for economic recovery.

“This is not, as some have suggested, a lamentation,” he said. “I don’t think President Mahama intended to write the second book of lamentations in the Old Testament. Instead, what he did was lay out a clear and actionable plan.”

Prof. Bokpin acknowledged that while State of the Nation speeches are often filled with political rhetoric, Mahama’s address went a step further by outlining concrete steps his administration intends to take.

“Clearly, the President outlined what they are going to do,” he noted. “Others may say that these speeches are just political positioning, but the President took it a step further by detailing specific actions they will take.”

While acknowledging the difficult path ahead, Prof. Bokpin maintained that the President’s commitment to tackling the crisis provides confidence that Ghana can navigate its financial difficulties and restore economic stability.
