NSA Reclaims Kaladan Park in Tamale After Protracted Legal Battle, Eyes Redevelopment Under Sports Infrastructure Reform Agenda

The National Sports Authority (NSA) has regained control of Kaladan Park and adjoining lands in Tamale, Northern Ghana, following the resolution of a protracted legal dispute, marking a critical step in the state agency’s plans to revitalise key sporting infrastructure nationwide.

The recovered property—spanning an area equivalent to five football fields—had long been the subject of encroachment and legal contention. The successful reclamation, according to NSA officials, paves the way for renewed investment in a region historically significant to Ghanaian football, with Kaladan Park once serving as the home ground of Real Tamale United.

The development was confirmed during a recent working tour of the Northern Regional capital by newly appointed Director General of the NSA, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah. Speaking after an engagement with staff at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium, Mr Ankrah acknowledged the dilapidated state of existing facilities but said the recovery of Kaladan Park represents “a new dawn for sports infrastructure development in the north.”

Chief Director of the NSA, Alhaji Abubakar Mahamoud, who accompanied the delegation, disclosed that the Authority had prevailed in the long-standing litigation surrounding the site. “We have secured full control of the land, and once final documentation is completed, we will begin formal engagement with private investors,” he noted.

The NSA has been rolling out its RESET agenda—an initiative aimed at reforming the governance and condition of sports infrastructure in Ghana. With growing calls for decentralised investment in regional facilities, the reclamation of Kaladan Park is being positioned as a strategic win, both administratively and symbolically.

Officials say the Authority is seeking development partners to support modernisation efforts, with the intention to turn Kaladan Park into a functional, multi-purpose facility aligned with broader national sports development objectives.
