Parliament Expresses Grief Over Death of Ministers, MP and 6 Others in Military Helicopter Crash
Parliament has expressed profound sorrow following the tragic deaths of senior government officials, including two ministers of state and a sitting Member of Parliament, in a military helicopter crash on Wednesday.
In a statement signed by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the legislative body described the incident as a “tragic passing” and extended its condolences to the bereaved families and the nation at large.
“Parliament is deeply saddened by this news, and would want to, at this time, express its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and indeed the entire Republic,” the Speaker stated.
Among the deceased are Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and Member of Parliament for Damongo, Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed. Several other officials were also confirmed dead.
The officials were aboard a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 military helicopter en route to Obuasi when the aircraft lost radar contact and subsequently crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.
The statement from Parliament concluded: “May the souls of our departed colleagues who have died in the service of our Republic rest in peace.”
The tragic incident has plunged the country into mourning, with the government directing all national flags to fly at half-mast.
