Ghana: Average monthly salary pegged at GHS 5,070; ranked 9th in Africa

Ghana has been ranked the ninth (9th) African country with the highest average monthly salary.

According to Salary Explorer, a salary comparison website, the average monthly salary of workers in dollar terms is $748, in the local currency, that’s GHS 5,070.

Salary Explorer notes that, salaries range from 1,280 GHS (lowest average) to 22,600 GHS (highest average, actual maximum salary is higher).

This is the average monthly salary including housing, transport, and other benefits. Salaries vary drastically between different careers.

  • Salary Range: Salaries in Ghana range from 1,280 GHS per month (minimum salary) to 22,600 GHS per month (maximum average salary, actual maximum is higher).
  • Median Salary: The median salary is 4,660 GHS per month, which means that half (50%) of the population are earning less than 4,660 GHS while the other half are earning more than 4,660 GHS. The median represents the middle salary value. Generally speaking, you would want to be on the right side of the graph with the group earning more than the median salary.
  • Percentiles: Closely related to the median are two values: the 25th and the 75th percentiles. Reading from the salary distribution diagram, 25% of the population are earning less than 2,680 GHS while 75% of them are earning more than 2,680 GHS. Also from the diagram, 75% of the population are earning less than 12,600 GHS while 25% are earning more than 12,600 GHS.

Employees in Ghana are likely to observe a salary increase of approximately 8% every 19 months.

Listed below are the average annual increase rates for each industry in Ghana for the year 2021. Companies within thriving industries tend to provide higher and more frequent raises.

Exceptions do exist, but generally speaking, the situation of any company is closely related to the economic situation in the country or region.

Meanwhile, Uganda, with an average monthly salary of $738 ranked behind Ghana as the tenth African country with the highest average monthly salary on the Continent.

Morocco, South Africa and Tunisia ranked as the first, second and third African countries with the highest average monthly salary of $2,031, $2,026 and $1,348 respectively.

  • Namibia: The average monthly salary in Namibia is $1.168
  • Botswana: The average monthly salary in Botswana is $1000.
  • Nigeria: The average monthly salary in Nigeria is $814.
  • Ghana: The average monthly salary in Ghana is $748.
  • Uganda: The average monthly salary in Uganda is $738.
