Black Queens Fall to Super Falcons in Final Pre-WAFCON Friendly

The Black Queens of Ghana faced a challenging test against Nigeria’s Super Falcons, losing 3-1 in their final friendly match ahead of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The match took place on Sunday and showcased the resilience of the Ghanaian team as they ramp up preparations for the tournament.

The Super Falcons took control early in the game, with Chiwendu Iheazou scoring a deflected goal in the 34th minute. Just ten minutes later, Asisat Oshoala converted a penalty to double Nigeria’s lead. Despite being on the back foot, the Black Queens showed determination, with Evelyn Badu having a goal ruled out for offside and Doris Boaduwaa narrowly missing the target.

In the dying moments of the match, Alice Kusi managed to score from the penalty spot in the 88th minute, but it was not enough to change the outcome, leaving the final score at 3-1 in favor of Nigeria.

Ghana’s coach, Kim Lars Bjorkegren, remains optimistic despite the defeat. “We fought hard against one of Africa’s top teams, and there are positives to take into the tournament,” he noted. The Black Queens are set to compete in WAFCON 2025, which runs from July 5 to 26 in Morocco. They will face reigning champions South Africa, Mali, and Tanzania in Group C.
