Black Stars Budget Presented by GFA Will Be Made Public – President Mahama
In a bold move to enhance accountability in sports funding, President John Dramani Mahama has declared his commitment to ensuring that all budgets allocated for national teams are made public.
During his recent State of the Nation Address, Mahama specifically called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to disclose the budget for the senior national team, the Black Stars, emphasizing that taxpayer money should be managed transparently.
“Next month, the senior national team, the Black Stars, now a pale shadow of their former glory, will be in action. I have instructed the Minister for Sports and Recreation to hold the GFA accountable, particularly regarding the team’s budget,” Mahama stated. “There will be no secrecy in how much the government spends on the national team. The budget presented by the FA and other associations must be made public, as it is taxpayers’ money.”
As the Black Stars prepare for their upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, the pressure is on to not only perform on the pitch but also to uphold the principles of transparency that the president advocates.
They are set to face Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on March 21, followed by a crucial match against Madagascar on March 24. These matches are pivotal as the team seeks to strengthen its chances of securing a spot at the 2026 World Cup in USA, Mexico and Canada.
