Black Stars must be built around Kudus – Asamoah Gyan

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan believes the Black Stars must be built around West Ham United midfielder Mohammed Kudus.

Asamoah Gyan, Ghana’s all-time leading scorer and one of the country’s greatest players, has heaped huge praise on young star Mohammed Kudus, declaring him the best Ghanaian player in the current era.

In comments made on Asempa, Gyan pointed to Kudus’ performances for both club and country as evidence that the talented 23-year-old has taken over the mantle from Ghana’s previous golden generations of players like Gyan himself, Michael Essien and Abedi Pele.

“So far it is obvious, when I say it’s obvious I mean you know, Mohammed Kudus,” Gyan stated.

“When I was coming up, we had Michael Essien, Stephen Appiah, Sulley Muntari and at a point it got to me. Players have come and gone. We had the Abedi Pele era, Stephen Appiah era, Michael Essien era and the Asamoah Gyan era and now it looks like it’s Kudus’ era.”

The former Sunderland and Al Ain striker was effusive in his praise of the West Ham United midfielder, highlighting his impact at both the club and international levels.

“I mean he is the only Ghanaian player performing in Europe. And not just in any league, but in the Premier League,” Gyan said.

“He’s not just doing well in Ghana but also in Africa. He’s the only African player who is doing so well for now. So we have to just support him.”

Kudus joined West Ham from Ajax last summer and has made an impressive start in England’s top flight, recording four assists and scoring 13 goals with seven coming in the Premier League.

Kudus, who made his Black Stars debut in 2019, has scored 11 goals in 32 appearances. He was Ghana’s best player at the 2022 World Cup and at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year in Ivory Coast.
