Black Stars Must Improve Ahead of Critical World Cup Qualifiers, Says Sports Minister
In a frank assessment of the Black Stars, Sports Minister Kofi Adams expressed his dissatisfaction with the team’s current performance. Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, Adams highlighted the need for significant improvement, especially in light of Ghana’s failure to qualify for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
Despite the team’s impressive position at the top of Group I in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, with 19 points from six wins, one draw, and one loss, Adams remains unconvinced. He pointed out that the Black Stars recently secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium, yet he feels more is required for the team to succeed on the international stage.
“Very soon, AFCON will start in Morocco. Is Ghana going to be there? No,” Adams stated, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. “We have not qualified for the World Cup yet…so if I tell you that I am impressed, then it means that I don’t know my job. There is a lot of room for improvement.”
Adams acknowledged that head coach Otto Addo has taken responsibility for the team’s performances, but the Minister’s comments suggest a growing impatience among officials and fans alike. With critical matches ahead, including the remaining World Cup qualifiers, the pressure is on both the coach and the players to elevate their game and secure Ghana’s spot in the tournament.
