Wimbledon Day 2 Wrap: Sinner Stays Cool as Gauff, Pegula, and Zverev Fall

Day two at Wimbledon saw world No. 1 Jannik Sinner advance smoothly into the second round, but it was another day of shocks at the All England Club as several seeded players suffered unexpected defeats.

Gauff Stunned by Yastremska

In a major upset, second seed Coco Gauff was knocked out by Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska, losing 7-6(3), 6-1. Gauff, fresh off her French Open victory, struggled to find her rhythm as Yastremska delivered a stellar performance.

Zverev Exits in Marathon Match

Third seed Alexander Zverev was eliminated in a grueling five-set battle against Arthur Rinderknech, who triumphed 7-6(3), 6-7(8), 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4. The match, which lasted nearly five hours, marked a disappointing end for Zverev, still seeking his first Grand Slam title.

The chaos continued with other notable exits, including seventh seed Lorenzo Musetti and third seed Jessica Pegula, both falling to lesser-known opponents. Musetti lost to Nikoloz Basilashvili, while Pegula was dispatched by Elisabetta Cocciaretto in straight sets.

Sinner’s Dominant Performance

Amid the turmoil, Jannik Sinner showcased his prowess, defeating fellow Italian Luca Nardi 6-4, 6-3, 6-0. Sinner’s confident display reaffirmed his status as a title contender following his recent French Open final loss.

Djokovic and British Hopes Advance

Novak Djokovic overcame a stomach bug to defeat Alexandre Muller 6-1, 6-7(7), 6-2, 6-2, setting up a clash with Dan Evans in the next round. Meanwhile, British hopes remained high as fourth seed Jack Draper progressed with ease after Sebastian Baez retired hurt.

Krejcikova Survives a Scare

Defending champion Barbora Krejcikova battled back from a set down to defeat 20-year-old Alexandra Eala 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, earning a place in the second round.

Notable Rising Stars Shine

American teenager Victoria Mboko made headlines by defeating 25th seed Magdalena Frech 6-3, 6-2, just hours after learning she had entered the draw as a Lucky Loser. Zeynep Sonmez also made history as the first Turkish woman to reach the second round at Wimbledon.

Kvitova Says Farewell

In an emotional farewell, two-time champion Petra Kvitova lost 6-3, 6-1 to 10th seed Emma Navarro, bringing an end to her illustrious Wimbledon career.
