Brentford striker Ivan Toney banned for 8 months over betting
Brentford’s star striker, Ivan Toney, has received a substantial suspension from all football-related activities for a duration of eight months due to his violation of the Football Association’s betting regulations.
The suspension will commence immediately and will continue until January 16, 2024. In addition to the suspension, Toney has been fined £50,000 after admitting to the breaches.
This means that Toney will be absent from Brentford’s last two matches of the season, including their game against Tottenham this Saturday and their final home fixture against Manchester City.
Under the imposed sanctions, he will not be permitted to train with his teammates at Brentford until September 17. The charges against Toney comprised 262 violations of FA rule E8, allegedly occurring between February 25, 2017, and January 23, 2021.
Following the FA’s withdrawal of 30 charges, Toney acknowledged his involvement in the remaining 232. Despite the severity of the punishment, the 27-year-old forward, who has achieved one cap for the England national team and impressively netted 21 goals in 35 appearances for Brentford this season, has the right to appeal the decision.
“Brentford FC notes the decision of an independent Regulatory Commission to issue an eight-month ban from all football and football-related activity to Ivan Toney with immediate effect.
“Ivan was charged with breaches of FA rule E8 and had a personal hearing earlier this week.
“Brentford FC is currently awaiting the publication of the written reasons of the Independent Regulatory Commission. We will review them before considering our next steps,” a club statement wrote on Wednesday.”
