BudgIT Ghana Mourns the Victims of the August 6 Helicopter Crash; Calls for Stronger Action Against Galamsey and a Transparent Investigation
BudgIT Ghana stands with the nation in deep mourning over the tragic helicopter crash of Wednesday, August 6, 2025, which claimed the lives of eight distinguished Ghanaians, notable among whom were Hon. Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence, and Hon. Alhaji Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, both of whom dedicated their lives to national service and public good.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to H.E. the President and the Government of Ghana, the Ghana Armed Forces, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the grieving families and communities who have lost distinguished members and leaders.
The delegation’s journey en route to Obuasi, Ashanti Region to launch a government initiative against illegal mining, was a vital mission to safeguard Ghana’s environment, water bodies, and the livelihoods of millions, and in their memory, we must renew and intensify the fight against illegal mining, ensuring the work they championed continues with greater urgency and resolve.
This devastating incident also calls for a comprehensive, independent, and transparent investigation into the causes and circumstances surrounding the crash. The findings must be made public in clear and accessible language, with swift implementation of safety and accountability measures to prevent such heart-wrenching tragedies from ever happening again.
BudgIT Ghana further urges the public to respect the dignity of the deceased and the privacy of their grieving families, refraining from speculation or misinformation during this period of national loss.
We stand in solidarity with all affected, and our thoughts and prayers remain with the families, colleagues, and communities of the victims as Ghana seeks healing, justice, and renewed commitment to protecting both its people and its environment.
And finally, we invite all citizens to join us in continuing this vital mission. Add your voice to the fight against illegal mining by signing our petition here: https://chng.it/MfvfbW6VTz
