Marseille knock PSG out of Coupe de France
Marseille are through to the quarter-finals of the Coupe de France after knocking out out Paris Saint-Germain, who were missing Kylian Mbappe but still boasted an attack of Neymar and Lionel Messi.
The hosts took the lead after half an hour through an Alexis Sanchez penalty, but a Sergio Ramos header from a Neymar corner had the Parisians level just before the break.
Marseille were not disheartened, however, and managed to get themselves ahead again in the 57th minute. A blocked shot fell to Ruslan Malinovskyi at the edge of the area and the Ukrainian lashed home emphatically on the half-volley – a terrific goal and a worthy winner.
In the latter stages, PSG tried to turn the screw, but the home side saw the game out to upset the odds against mega-rich PSG. They now progress to the quarter-finals, while PSG crash out disappointingly early.
PSG must now focus on Ligue 1 and the Champions League with some crucial games coming up in each in the coming weeks which could define their season.
Before the end of the month, PSG have three games against top-six opposition domestically, including another trip to Marseille, as well as the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie with Bayern Munich.
