Leslie Afotey, a bulk cash teller with the Spintex branch of CAL Bank has been sentenced to two years of imprisonment by an Accra High Court for stealing Ghs 499,022.10 belonging to the Bank.

The prosecution team led by Chief Inspector Emmanuel Haligah said, Mr Afotey’s task was to go out and take the daily savings of customers of the bank.

He was also mandated to take the money to the bank and deposit it into an account.

As a control measure, Chief Inspector Haligah said the bank audited its accounts and staff before the close of every year.

On December 2018, the bank audited an account in which the convict had been depositing monies collected from customers and detected that an amount of Ghs 499,022.10 was unaccounted for.

Upon hearing about the audit which revealed that the said amount could not be accounted for, Mr Afotey is said to have bolted.

The prosecution notes that the convict was arrested on December 28, 2018 and admitted to the offence during an interrogation and pleaded that he should be given a month to refund the money.
