Ghana to facilitate participation of Barbados in the All African Games 2023

Prime Minister of the Republic of Barbados, Mia Mottley, has disclosed that discussions are ongoing between the Republic of Barbados and Ghana to facilitate the participation of Barbados in the All Africa Games which will be hosted in Accra next year.

Speaking at the Ghana-Barbados Business Roundtable held under the auspices of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), on Monday, March 7, she said talks are on going between the National Sports Authority and the Barbados Sports Ministry to develop Cricket and other sporting disciplines in both countries and also facilitate the participation of Barbados in the 2023 African Games.

“We spoke with the Director of the NSA, Prof. Twumasi and he has indicated that the two parties will have a MoU and that has been channeled to our Ministry of Sports so that we can have an MoU across all areas of sports both in Ghana and the Barbados and that Ghana will facilitate the participation of Barbados in the All Africa Games 2023”, she stated.

Ghana was confirmed as the host of the 2023 African Games after organisers signed an agreement with the African Union (AU) in 2018.

After the awarding of the rights to host the tournament, doubts had emerged over whether the nation would remain host of the event but those doubts were cleared as the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo cut the sod for the commencement of work for the construction of the one hundred- and forty-five-million-dollar ($145 million) sports complex at Borteyman, in the Greater Accra Region,

The Complex which will host most of the Games will be fitted with a one thousand (1,000) seater competition swimming pool, that is a 10-lane competition swimming pool; an 8-lane warm-up swimming pool; a one thousand (1,000) seater multi-purpose sports hall for basketball, badminton, boxing, table tennis and weightlifting; and a five-hundred-seater (500) temporary dome for handball, volleyball, judo, karate and taekwondo.

The African Games is set to be held in three cities in Ghana; in the capital city Accra, Kumasi and Cape Coast.

Ghana will host the Games for the first time, with the multi-sport event now in its 13th edition.
