Champions League: Man City vs. Real Madrid – A Modern Classic

In what has become one of the premier rivalries in European football, Manchester City and Real Madrid are set to clash for the fourth consecutive season in the UEFA Champions League. This time, the two heavyweights will meet earlier than expected in the play-off round, with the first leg taking place at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester on Tuesday.

As anticipation builds for this latest installment, here is a look back at five memorable encounters between these two giants over the past decade that have solidified their rivalry as a modern classic.

2015-16 Semifinals: A Heartbreaking Exit for City

In their first knockout meeting, Manuel Pellegrini’s City aimed to reach their maiden Champions League final. However, a deflected cross from Gareth Bale proved decisive in a tightly contested tie. After a goalless draw in the first leg, City fell to a single goal at the Bernabeu, allowing Real Madrid to advance. The Spanish side, under Zinedine Zidane, went on to claim their 11th European Cup title by defeating Atletico Madrid in the final.

2019-20 Last 16: City’s First Triumph

Fast forward to 2020, and Pep Guardiola’s City found their footing. They faced Madrid in the last 16 and emerged victorious with a 4-2 aggregate scoreline, achieving a historic win at the Santiago Bernabeu. After falling behind to an Isco goal, City rallied with strikes from Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne, eventually securing their place in the quarterfinals. However, their journey ended prematurely when they were stunned by Lyon in the next round.

2021-22 Semifinals: A Legendary Comeback

The 2021-22 semifinals showcased one of the greatest comebacks in Champions League history. Despite dominating the first leg and leading 4-3, City let Madrid escape with a chance. In the return leg, Riyad Mahrez’s goal seemed to seal the deal for City, but Rodrygo’s stunning late brace sent the match into extra time. Karim Benzema’s penalty ultimately propelled Madrid to their 14th European Cup final, where they triumphed over Liverpool.

2022-23 Semifinals: City’s Redemption

Determined to learn from past mistakes, City faced Madrid again in the 2022-23 semifinals. This time, they were ruthless. After a tense 1-1 draw in the first leg, City unleashed their full potential at home, delivering a commanding 5-1 victory. De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, and others showcased their attacking prowess, with City eventually claiming their first Champions League title by defeating Inter Milan in the final.

2023-24 Quarterfinals: Drama in Every Sense

In a gripping quarterfinal encounter, Madrid and City played out a thrilling 4-4 draw over two legs, with Madrid advancing on penalties. The first leg in Madrid ended 3-3, setting the stage for a tense return match. Despite City dominating possession and creating numerous chances, they fell victim to Madrid’s famed resilience. The tie culminated in a penalty shootout where City faltered, allowing Madrid to lift the trophy once more after defeating Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.
