CHAN 2024: Angola Complete Comeback Win Over Zambia, Kenya Maintain Unbeaten Run

The TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024 witnessed dramatic turns as Angola staged a stunning comeback to defeat Zambia 2-1, while co-hosts Kenya shocked two-time champions Morocco with a resilient 1-0 victory. These results have reshaped the landscape of Group A as the tournament reaches its critical stages.

Kaporal’s Late Heroics Propel Angola Past Zambia

In a match that showcased determination and resilience, Angola’s substitute, Kaporal, came off the bench to score twice in the final 11 minutes, leading his team to a crucial 2-1 victory against Zambia. This win lifted Angola to second place in Group A with four points, breathing new life into their campaign.

Zambia initially took the lead in the 73rd minute when Dominic Chanda capitalized on a loose ball following a set-piece. However, Angola responded dramatically, with Kaporal leveling the score in the 79th minute before netting the winner just seven minutes later. This remarkable turnaround keeps Angola’s hopes alive for a quarter-final berth, while Zambia remains at the bottom of the group without a point.

Kenya Edges Past Morocco Despite Red Card Drama

Kenya secured a 1-0 victory over Morocco at the Moi International Sports Centre, maintaining their unbeaten run in the tournament. Ryan Ogam’s goal in the 42nd minute proved decisive, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

Kenya’s resolve was tested when Chrispine Erambo received a red card just before halftime, leaving the team with ten men for the entire second half. However, they defended brilliantly against Morocco’s relentless attacks, with goalkeeper Byrne Omondi making crucial saves to preserve the lead. This victory propels Kenya to seven points, putting them on the verge of a historic quarter-final berth.

Following these matches, the updated Group A standings are as follows:

1. Kenya – 7 points (3 matches)
2. Angola – 4 points (3 matches)
3. Morocco – 3 points (2 matches)
4. DR Congo – 3 points (2 matches)

With two games remaining for most teams, Angola’s win positions them strongly for advancement, while Zambia’s chances now hinge on winning their final matches.

Implications and Upcoming Matches

For Angola, this victory is a statement of intent, showcasing their ability to perform under pressure. Coach Pedro Gonçalves emphasized the importance of this win, as it keeps their hopes alive in the tournament.
