CHAN 2024: Nigeria Restores Pride, Hosts Shine as Tournament Enters Quarter-Final
The TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024 reached an exhilarating climax in the group stage, with Nigeria salvaging some pride through a 2-0 victory over Congo, while co-hosts Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda all advanced to the knockout phase.
Nigeria’s Redemption
In Dar es Salaam, Nigeria concluded their campaign on a high note, securing a morale-boosting win against Congo. Goals from Anas Yusuf and Sikiru Alimi restored some dignity for the Super Eagles after two disappointing defeats that had led to their early elimination. Despite the win, Nigeria finished third in Group D, missing out on qualification as Sudan and Senegal progressed with five points each.
The match was marked by intense pressure, with both teams understanding the stakes. Nigeria’s breakthrough came in the 56th minute when Yusuf found the net, followed by Alimi’s late header in stoppage time, sealing a hard-fought victory. However, Nigeria’s earlier struggles proved costly, leaving them with lingering questions about their depth and preparation.
Hosts Shine in Group Stage
As the tournament advances, the co-hosts have made a significant impact. Kenya topped Group A in their debut CHAN campaign, finishing with 10 points after a 1-0 victory over Zambia. Their disciplined defense has made them formidable opponents as they prepare to face Madagascar in the quarter-finals.
Tanzania also finished first in Group B, amassing 10 points and showcasing their attacking prowess throughout the tournament. They will face Morocco in a challenging quarter-final tie.
Uganda, after six unsuccessful attempts to progress past the group stage, finally broke through, drawing 3-3 with South Africa in a dramatic encounter. Rogers Torach’s stoppage-time penalty secured their place at the top of Group C, and they will face Senegal in the quarter-finals.
