CK Akonnor urged to sue Sports Ministry over $275,000 salary arrears

CK Akonnor urged to sue Sports Ministry over $275,000 salary arrears

Former president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has urged Charles Kwabla Akonnor to take legal action against the Ministry of Youth and Sports for owed arrears.

Akonnor, who coached the Black Stars from 2020 to 2021, is said to be owed a salary for 11 months despite being fired two years ago.

The former Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak coach was sacked with four months left on his Black Stars contract which meant with a monthly salary of $25,000 he had to be compensated $100,000.

Meanwhile, he was also owed for seven months which amounted to $175,000 in addition to the four months’ arrears. Therefore, Akonnor would have to be paid a total amount of $275,000.

Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe believes it’s about time the coach sought justice in court following the ‘unfair’ treatment he suffered during and after his spell with the national team.

”He should take them to court if they are refusing to pay him. This is a straightforward matter; the person has worked for you, and you are not paying him. He should take them to court.”

”I was even thinking when he was denied a place to stay, he would have resigned. A job that you are supposed to have qualified for; there were others who were competing with you but you got it ahead of them so it means you qualified, so I don’t understand why he should allow himself to be treated this way,” Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe stated.

Akonnor who replaced Kwesi Appiah in 2020 parted ways with the Black Stars in 2021 and saw his role handed to veteran coach Milovan Rajevac. The Serbian gaffer also departed after a dismal showing with the Black Stars at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Otto Addo who was part of Rajevac’s backroom staff was appointed to take over on an interim basis and also stepped down after the team’s group-stage elimination at the 2022 World Cup. Chris Hughton was then named the new coach in March and has already managed three games winning one and drawing the other two.
