Lamine Yamal Takes On Barcelona’s Legendary Number 10 Shirt

Young Barcelona star Lamine Yamal has officially inherited the iconic number 10 shirt, a number that carries the weight of history and the legacy of Lionel Messi. The announcement was made on Wednesday, with the club celebrating Yamal’s new role on social media, saying, “Our 10,” alongside a video showcasing the talented winger.

At a special event at the Spotify Camp Nou stadium, the 18-year-old expressed his determination to carve his own path, stating, “Messi made his path and I will make mine.” He emphasized his commitment to work hard and bring joy to both local and global fans.

Yamal, who helped Barcelona secure a domestic treble last season, signed a new contract in May that extends until 2031, making him one of the highest-paid players at the club. With a remarkable record of 25 goals in over 100 appearances since debuting at just 15 years old, Yamal is often compared to the Argentine great who also emerged from the club’s famed La Masia youth academy.

“I hope to enjoy myself more than last year and make my dreams come true,” said Yamal, who aspires to win both the Champions League with Barcelona and the World Cup with Spain. His passion for the club is evident: “Barca is my life. I’ve been here since I was seven. For all kids from La Masia, their dream is to make it to the first team, and I’m living that dream.”

Previously, Yamal wore the number 27 and then the number 19, which Messi donned during his early years at Barcelona. Ansu Fati, who took the number 10 shirt after Messi’s departure in 2021, struggled with injuries and has since been loaned to Monaco.

The number 10 shirt has a storied history at Barcelona, having been worn by legends such as Diego Maradona, Ronaldinho, and of course, Messi. Yamal recognizes the significance of this legacy, stating, “I am grateful for what they gave the club and I will try to continue this legacy.”
