Coach Kim Björkegren Aims to Lead Ghana’s Black Queens to Surprise Victory at WAFCON 2025
As the Black Queens of Ghana prepare for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, all eyes are on head coach Kim Lars Björkegren, who is determined to lead the team to new heights.
Appointed in early 2025, the Swedish tactician brings nearly two decades of coaching experience from Sweden, China, and the United States. Despite Ghana’s storied history in women’s football, having never won the WAFCON title, Björkegren remains optimistic. The Black Queens finished as runners-up in 1998, 2002, and 2006, and now aim to reclaim their place as a top contender.
Building on a Strong Foundation
In an exclusive interview with CAFOnline.com, Björkegren spoke about his motivation for taking the role. “The talent in Ghana is immense,” he said, highlighting the impressive young players in the squad. He aims to enhance the team’s tactical understanding and physical strength, building upon the foundation laid by former coach Nora Häuptle.
Acknowledging the Challenge
Despite Ghana’s rich football history, Björkegren acknowledges the pressure of expectations. “We’re not among the favourites,” he stated, “but I believe we can be a strong underdog. If we stick to the game plan and have a good day, we can beat any team.”
Key Preparation Areas
With the tournament approaching, preparation remains critical. “We’re rotating the squad, testing new formations, and evaluating players both locally and abroad,” he explained. He believes that team depth is a significant strength, allowing them to function well as a cohesive unit.
Team Spirit and Work Ethic
Björkegren emphasized the strong bond among players, which translates to their training sessions. “There’s still room for improvement in fitness and intensity, but the team spirit is excellent,” he noted. He believes that with hard work and belief, the Black Queens can overcome challenges.
Looking Ahead
With Ghana last reaching the WAFCON final in 2006, Björkegren knows that success requires a combination of belief, hard work, and a little luck. He expressed confidence in standout young talents like Stella, Princess Marfo, and Doris Boaduwaa, who could make a significant impact at the tournament.
A Message to Supporters
As the Black Queens head into WAFCON 2025, Björkegren’s message to Ghanaians is one of hope and determination. “It’s an honour to lead this team,” he said. “We’re working hard to make Ghana proud. With your support and a bit of luck, I believe we can have a memorable summer together.”
