Communications Minister urges local IT firms to create a communication application for the country

Communication and Digitisation Minister, Ursula Owusu Ekuful, has encouraged information technology giants in the country, particularly the local ones, to build a local communication application to serve as the main source of communication for Ghanaians or an alternative to the other communication applications.

Speaking at the MoU signing ceremony between her outfit and the Digital Transformation Center, on Tuesday, she noted young IT specialists in the country are capable of developing an application for communication when given the opportunity, stating that major softwares that are currently used in the country were designed by young people within the technology space.

“By government procurement, the National ID, the Digital Address System was developed by a local company, our SIM registration platform was developed by a local company on existing infrastructures that we have, and so does Ghana.gov payment platform which was developed by a local platform,” she said.

According to her, countries like China have developed their own communication applications and are currently in use by its citizens.

She said her office is ever ready to provide the necessary assistance to any company that shows the readiness to come up with such invention.

Government signs digitalization MoU with German Government

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support government’s digital innovation agenda has been signed between the Ministry of Communications and Digitisation and the Digital Transformation Centre (DTC).

The MOU commits the two entities to jointly implement projects and activities at the DTC to support the sustainable growth of the digital economy.

The DTC was built by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and forms part of a pan-African network of flagship projects that the German Government is building to support the transformation process in Africa.

The MoU would, therefore, guide the partnership between the two entities in helping Ghana to achieve an inclusive digital economy and society.
