Communications Ministry Slaps MultiChoice Ghana With GHS 10,000 Daily Fine Over DStv Pricing Row
The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations has begun imposing a statutory penalty of GH¢10,000 per day on MultiChoice Ghana (DStv) for failing to submit critical pricing information requested under the Electronic Communications Act (ECA).
Sector Minister Samuel Nartey George (MP) announced the enforcement on August 15, 2025, after the pay-TV operator missed an extended deadline of August 11 to provide a detailed breakdown of bouquet prices, tax components, and regional pricing comparisons across at least six African countries.
“The regulator has confirmed that the requested information has still not been provided. From today, therefore, the Ministry will begin applying the statutory fine of GH¢10,000 per day until the full information is received,” Mr George said.
The Ministry has also cautioned that DStv’s operating licence could be suspended if no agreement on subscription fee reductions is reached by September 6, 2025.
Mr George stressed that the sanctions are not a substitute for dialogue, adding that once the data is submitted, government will review whether taxes or corporate pricing decisions are responsible for high subscription costs.
Industry observers say the move signals a tougher regulatory stance aimed at protecting consumers in Ghana’s pay-TV market.
