Covid-19: World Bank commence processes to make available $60m additional funding to Ghana

Information reaching norvanreports, indicate that the World Bank Group has begun processing an additional $60 million COVID-19 funding for Ghana.

The $60 million additional funding from the World Bank is to further support the country’s fight against the global Covid-19 pandemic.

The disbursement of the additional funding was earlier mentioned in an interview by the World Bank Country Director for Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone, Pierre Frank Laporte.

“You see the Omicron variant has reminded us of something that we should never think the Covid will just go away like that. It may go away, it may not. At this point in time, we’re discussing a further tranche of support for Covid.

“If all goes well it should be available early March. We’re looking at $60 million dollars, which $20 million will go directly for more vaccines and the $40 million for additional treatment centres,” he stated.

The $60 million funding is in addition to the over $436 million already committed by the World Bank to government’s Covid-19 fight.

It is expected that the additional funding will be approved before the end of the month and consequently disbursed to the country.

The World Bank health sector support for the Ghana COVID-19 emergency preparedness and response and vaccination summed up to $435.8 million.

Of the $435.8 million amount, $2.5 million was rechanneled from a previous Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition Project (MCHNP); $65.0 million from the CERC of the GARID project; $35.0 million of the Ghana COVID-19 Emergency Preparedness and Response Project and its 1st and 2nd additional financing of $130 million and $200 million, respectively as well as $3.3 million from the Pandemic Emergency Financing Facility (PEF).

These investments are well balanced between emergency response and health systems strengthening.
