  • Antonelli Extends F1 Title Lead With Fourth Straight Win at Canadian Grand Prix

Kimi Antonelli tightened his grip on the 2026 Formula 1 title race with a fourth consecutive Grand Prix victory at the Canadian Grand Prix, capping a dramatic weekend in Montreal marked by Mercedes tension, McLaren strategy failure, Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari revival and Max Verstappen’s first podium of the season.

The Italian teenager delivered another composed drive to extend his championship lead, taking full advantage after Mercedes team-mate George Russell retired from the race while locked in a fierce intra-team battle at the front.

Russell had arrived in Canada looking to cut Antonelli’s 20-point advantage in the drivers’ standings and appeared capable of doing so after taking pole position for Friday’s Sprint Qualifying.

But the weekend quickly exposed the rising competitive tension inside Mercedes. Russell and Antonelli went wheel-to-wheel during the Sprint race, with contact between the pair forcing the Italian briefly onto the grass and triggering tense radio exchanges.

Antonelli later said discussions with Russell and Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff helped clarify the team’s position on how freely both drivers would be allowed to race. That understanding was tested again on Sunday as the Mercedes pair repeatedly swapped positions at the front in a race that threatened to escalate into another internal flashpoint.

Russell’s challenge, however, ended on Lap 30 when a power unit failure forced him into retirement. The incident turned what had been a direct title fight into a clear path for Antonelli, who managed the race from there to secure his fourth straight victory after earlier wins in China, Japan and Miami.

The result moved Antonelli 43 points clear at the top of the drivers’ championship and strengthened his claim as the defining force of the season so far.

For Mercedes, the win confirmed the raw pace of its 2026 package, but Russell’s retirement and the growing tension between its drivers leave the team with a delicate management challenge. Antonelli is building title momentum, but Russell remains close enough to fight — and frustrated enough to make the rivalry increasingly difficult to contain.

McLaren endured a far more painful afternoon after a bold tyre strategy collapsed almost immediately.

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri started the race on intermediate tyres despite improving weather conditions. The decision proved costly within the opening laps, forcing both drivers to stop early for slicks and dropping them down the order.

Norris had briefly surged into the lead at Turn 1 after an excellent getaway, but the early pit stop erased that advantage. His race deteriorated further after a trip through the grass created reliability concerns, before a suspected gearbox issue eventually forced him to retire.

Piastri’s afternoon also unravelled after he locked up at the hairpin and collided with Alex Albon, ending the Williams driver’s race. The Australian received a 10-second penalty and finished outside the points in 11th.

The result was a major setback for McLaren, who lost further ground to Ferrari in the battle for second place in the constructors’ championship.

Ferrari, by contrast, left Montreal with renewed belief after Lewis Hamilton produced his strongest performance since joining the Scuderia.

The seven-time world champion started fifth and drove with authority, eventually finishing second after a late overtake on Verstappen. Hamilton described the podium as his “happiest day” since joining Ferrari in 2025, with the result marking his second podium for the team and his first runner-up finish in a Grand Prix in red.

Hamilton’s performance offered Ferrari a badly needed lift and suggested that the team may finally be unlocking more consistent race pace after an uneven start to the campaign.

Team-mate Charles Leclerc salvaged fourth but cut a more frustrated figure. The Monegasque admitted he had struggled badly with the SF-26 throughout the weekend and described the event as one of the toughest of his career.

For Verstappen, third place represented an important breakthrough after a difficult start to the season by his own high standards. The reigning world champion inherited second after Russell’s retirement before being passed by Hamilton in the closing stages, but still welcomed Red Bull’s progress.

The Dutchman’s first podium of 2026 came alongside another strong performance from team-mate Isack Hadjar, who finished fifth to underline Red Bull’s improved competitiveness.

Alpine also enjoyed a standout weekend, led by Franco Colapinto’s career-best sixth-place finish. The Argentine produced a composed drive despite damaging his front wing after sliding into the wall on a wet patch.

His result was even more impressive given that he had missed the entire first practice session due to a power unit issue. Team-mate Pierre Gasly also scored points in eighth, strengthening Alpine’s position in the constructors’ standings following the team’s recent upgrade package.

The Canadian Grand Prix ultimately delivered several defining themes for the season ahead. Antonelli now looks increasingly difficult to stop. Mercedes have the fastest car but a growing driver-management problem. Ferrari have found fresh momentum through Hamilton. McLaren’s title push has been damaged by execution errors. Red Bull, after weeks of frustration, finally appear to be moving in the right direction.

For Antonelli, Montreal was another statement of authority. For Russell, it was a missed chance. For Hamilton, it was the clearest sign yet that his Ferrari chapter may still produce special days.

And for the 2026 title race, Canada may prove a turning point the weekend Antonelli stopped looking like a rising star and started looking like the championship favourite.
