- Kotoko Face Early Title Test as Unbeaten Samartex Wait in Samreboi
Asante Kotoko face their sternest examination of the young Ghana Premier League season on Sunday when they travel to Samreboi to meet an FC Samartex side that has won both of its opening matches.
The Porcupine Warriors are also unbeaten under new head coach Eric Tinkler, collecting four points from their first two games after a 2-2 opening-day draw with Debibi United and a 2-1 victory over Heart of Lions.
The Matchday Three encounter at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena is scheduled to kick off at 3pm GMT on September 20.
Tinkler has attempted to strip the challenge down to what his players can influence, rather than the long journey, hostile surroundings or Samartex’s early form. “I said to the players we need to think about focusing on the controllables,” he said ahead of the fixture.
“We can’t control the fact that the trip will be a very long trip, that is just a fact and we have to accept it, but we’ve got to try to make the best of it.”
That message is consistent with the South African coach’s attempt to build a more disciplined mentality at Kotoko following an eighth-place league finish last season.
Tinkler warned before the opening game that “complacency cannot be permitted”, arguing that championship campaigns are shaped as much by points collected against supposedly less glamorous opposition as by results against traditional rivals.
The early evidence is mixed but encouraging: Kotoko dropped points against newly promoted Debibi before recovering to beat Heart of Lions at Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
Samartex represent a considerably different challenge from either of those opponents. Under new head coach Nana Kweku Agyemang, the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League champions have opened the campaign with two victories and sit second in the standings, entering Sunday’s game with maximum points.
Their start has been built around an assertive style that seeks to control possession while pressing aggressively when the ball is lost, an approach Tinkler says Kotoko have studied carefully.
The Kotoko coach, however, has indicated that he does not intend to abandon his preferred football simply because of Samartex’s strengths.
He has said the Porcupine Warriors may alter aspects of their defensive shape but will continue to pursue their established playing philosophy, placing greater emphasis on intensity and execution than wholesale tactical retreat.
“Playing against Samartex is not going to be an easy game, but our actions will determine the results,” Tinkler said.
The Nsenkyire Sports Arena adds another layer to the assignment. Kotoko have not beaten Samartex away from home since 2023, while the compact venue and strong local support have made Samreboi one of the more difficult trips on the domestic calendar.
Tinkler nevertheless insists his players should approach away games with the same ambition they carry into Baba Yara, telling them that “every away game must be seen as a home game”.
That mindset will be important because an early gap can begin to emerge quickly in a league where consistency has often separated title challengers from the chasing pack.
Samartex already have six points from six available, while Kotoko arrive with four, meaning victory for the hosts would stretch the difference between the clubs to five points after only three matches.
A Kotoko win, by contrast, would take Tinkler’s side above Samartex and reinforce the belief that the changes made during the off-season are beginning to translate into results.
Kotoko’s most recent performance offered evidence of both progress and vulnerability. Emmanuel Mamah opened the scoring against Heart of Lions before creating the second for Isaac Opoku Agyemang, but the Porcupine Warriors were forced to protect a 2-1 advantage after conceding a late penalty and losing Hamaid Fuseini to a straight red card.
Holding on for victory ended a six-match winless run against Heart of Lions, but Sunday will require greater control against a Samartex side arriving with considerably stronger momentum.
For Tinkler, the match is also an early measure of whether the winning mentality he has repeatedly demanded can survive outside Kumasi.
“It doesn’t matter who we play against. It doesn’t matter whether we’re playing at home or away,” he said in comments released by Kotoko. “We have to play with the winning mentality in order to achieve our objectives.”
Samartex will have their own reasons to view the fixture as a statement opportunity. Six points from the opening two matches have placed them among the early pace-setters, and victory over one of Ghana football’s traditional heavyweights would strengthen the argument that their strong start is more than an opening-season burst.
The club’s official schedule confirms Sunday’s encounter as its Matchday Three home fixture at Nsenkyire, with the hosts seeking to preserve their perfect record.
The contest therefore carries significance beyond three points, even this early in the campaign. Kotoko are attempting to establish themselves as a more resilient and disciplined side under Tinkler, while Samartex have an opportunity to underline their credentials by taking maximum points from another demanding fixture.
With both clubs unbeaten, Sunday’s game offers one of the first serious indicators of how the upper end of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League table may begin to take shape.
Tinkler’s insistence on focusing on the “controllables” may ultimately prove the most useful framing for Kotoko. The journey to Samreboi, Samartex’s form and the home atmosphere are fixed elements; Kotoko’s pressing, concentration, set-piece organisation and decision-making are not.
If the Porcupine Warriors can control those details, they can leave one of the league’s more difficult venues with a result that would carry significance well beyond Matchday Three.
