  • Ghanaian Firms to Receive Export Readiness Support Under AGI-Danish Industry Programme

The Association of Ghana Industries, in partnership with Danish Industry, has rolled out a new initiative aimed at strengthening the capacity of Ghanaian businesses to become more sustainable, competitive and export-ready.

The initiative is expected to support selected companies to improve their operational systems, meet market requirements and position themselves for opportunities in regional and international trade.

The launch brought together industry leaders, AGI member companies, representatives of the Danish Embassy, development partners and private-sector stakeholders.

The programme forms part of broader efforts to help Ghanaian businesses overcome long-standing barriers that limit their ability to compete beyond the domestic market.

These barriers include weak compliance systems, limited access to export intelligence, inadequate product standardisation, high production costs, financing constraints and difficulty meeting sustainability requirements demanded by international buyers.

For many Ghanaian manufacturers and agribusinesses, export readiness is no longer only about producing at scale.

It increasingly requires proper documentation, quality certification, environmental compliance, traceability, packaging standards, governance systems and the ability to meet strict buyer requirements in foreign markets.

The AGI-Danish Industry partnership is therefore expected to focus on building the internal capacity of businesses to meet these demands.

The initiative also comes at a time when Ghana is seeking to expand non-traditional exports, deepen industrialisation and take greater advantage of market access opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Although Ghana has made progress in promoting industrial growth, many local firms still struggle to move from domestic production to consistent export participation.

A major weakness has been the limited number of businesses that are fully prepared to meet export-market standards on a sustainable basis.

The new programme is expected to help close that gap by supporting companies to improve competitiveness, strengthen production systems and align their operations with international expectations.

For AGI, the initiative is consistent with its long-standing advocacy for industrial transformation, local value addition and stronger private-sector participation in export development.

For Danish Industry, the partnership provides a platform to transfer experience, technical knowledge and business development support to Ghanaian firms seeking to operate at higher standards.

The initiative is also expected to strengthen links between Ghanaian businesses and international partners, including buyers, investors, technical experts and development agencies.

Such partnerships are important because export growth requires more than policy ambition.

Businesses need practical support to improve production efficiency, meet quality standards, reduce waste, manage energy costs, improve packaging and build reliable supply chains.

Sustainability is also becoming a central requirement in global trade.

International buyers are increasingly demanding evidence that products are made under responsible environmental, labour and governance conditions.

This means Ghanaian exporters must prepare not only to compete on price, but also on compliance, reliability and sustainability.

The AGI-Danish Industry initiative could therefore help local businesses respond to changing trade conditions, especially in markets where sustainability reporting and supply-chain due diligence are becoming more important.

The programme could also support Ghana’s efforts to move beyond exporting raw materials toward higher-value manufactured and processed goods.

If properly implemented, it could improve the readiness of firms in manufacturing, agro-processing, packaging, light industry and other productive sectors.

For small and medium-sized enterprises, the initiative could be particularly useful.

Many SMEs have products with export potential but lack the systems, certification, financing discipline and market knowledge required to scale beyond Ghana.

A structured export-readiness programme can help such firms understand what buyers require, identify gaps in their operations and take practical steps to improve.

The launch also sends an important signal about the role of partnerships in Ghana’s industrial policy.

Government policies can create the enabling environment, but private-sector institutions and international industry groups are often better placed to deliver hands-on business support.

The challenge will be to ensure that the initiative produces measurable outcomes.

These should include the number of firms supported, improvements in compliance, new export contracts, higher production standards, stronger sustainability practices and increased participation in regional or international markets.

Ghana’s export development agenda requires more businesses that can consistently produce quality goods, meet standards, deliver on time and compete in demanding markets.

The AGI-Danish Industry partnership is a step in that direction.

For Ghanaian firms, the message is clear: export opportunities are expanding, but only businesses that are prepared, compliant and competitive will be able to take full advantage.

The success of the initiative will therefore depend on whether participating companies can convert training and technical support into real export performance.
