Kofi Adams: Withholding Black Stars Budget Kept Focus on World Cup Qualifiers
Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, revealed the rationale behind not disclosing the budget for the Black Stars’ activities during the latest international window.
The national team recently showcased their prowess by defeating Chad 5-0 and Madagascar 3-0 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, placing them in a strong position within Group I.
Despite President John Mahama’s promise to announce the budget in his State of the Nation Address, Adams emphasized that revealing financial details could have distracted the team during critical preparations.
“People were asking me to disclose the budget for the games, but I kept asking myself what the budget would do for the team ahead of the games?” he stated during his interview with Asempa FM. “Sometimes, some situations create distractions for the team, so we weigh every situation before making a decision.”
Despite the initial secrecy, Adams reassured fans that the budget for both fixtures would eventually be made public. “There is nothing to hide from the public, but we must know it is expensive to take care of the national team because most of the players are coming from Europe,” he noted.
The Black Stars currently lead Group I with 15 points from six matches, and the focus remains on maintaining this momentum as they aim for a spot in next year’s World Cup. Coach Otto Addo has been vocal about the importance of a distraction-free environment, especially after their recent successes.
