Dr. Adrian Alter Assumes Office as IMF Resident Representative in Ghana
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has appointed Dr. Adrian Alter as its new Resident Representative in Ghana, effective September 2, 2025.
Dr. Alter takes over from Dr. Leandro Medina, who concluded his three-year tenure in August 2025. He arrived in Accra earlier in August to facilitate a smooth transition and has since commenced official duties, including engagements with government officials on Ghana’s IMF-supported programme.
Already, he has begun work on the Fund’s fifth programme review for Ghana and has held discussions on the broader economic outlook, particularly with respect to achieving key targets under the ongoing fourth review.
Dr. Alter, currently a Senior Economist at the IMF, brings over a decade of experience working at the intersection of finance, policy, and development. His expertise spans financial stability, inflation, and sovereign debt management, with contributions to IMF-supported programmes in Ghana, Serbia, and Tunisia.
Prior to joining the IMF, he worked with the European Central Bank (ECB), the Deutsche Bundesbank, and UBS Investment Bank. He earned a PhD in Quantitative Economics and Finance (magna cum laude) from the University of Konstanz, Germany, in 2013, and holds an MSc in Finance from HEC Lausanne, Switzerland.
His earlier professional experience includes contributing to the ECB’s Financial Stability Review, conducting systemic risk analysis at the Bundesbank, and supporting equity research at UBS. He also attended Yale School of Management’s Summer Institute on Financial Stability in 2016.
As IMF Resident Representative, Dr. Alter will coordinate programme activities in Ghana, provide policy guidance on tax reforms, and serve as the Fund’s spokesperson in the country. He is also expected to work closely with the Ministry of Finance, the Bank of Ghana, and civil society to advance Ghana’s macroeconomic stability and development objectives.
