- 2026 FIFA World Cup: Black Stars Stand Firm Against England to Move Within Touching Distance of Knockout Stage
Ghana took a giant step toward the knockout phase of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after producing a disciplined and determined performance to hold England to a goalless draw in their Group L clash in Boston on Tuesday night.
The hard-earned point leaves the Black Stars second in the group with four points, level with England, who remain top on goal difference. The result also places Ghana in a strong position to qualify for the Round of 32, with their fate potentially sealed depending on the outcome of the later match between Panama and Croatia.
Facing one of the tournament favourites, Ghana entered the contest knowing that avoiding defeat would significantly boost their chances of progression. Carlos Queiroz’s men responded with a resilient display, frustrating England throughout a match dominated by the Three Lions in possession but lacking the cutting edge needed to break down Ghana’s well-organised defence.
England controlled proceedings from the opening whistle, patiently moving the ball around while Ghana sat deep and looked to strike on the counterattack. The European side enjoyed an overwhelming share of possession and by the 37th minute had completed 283 passes compared to Ghana’s 54, yet clear scoring opportunities remained limited.
Much of England’s attacking threat in the first half came from the right flank through Reece James and Noni Madueke. The pair linked up effectively on several occasions, but Ghana’s defenders remained alert, with Thomas Partey producing a crucial intervention early on to halt a dangerous move.
Declan Rice came closest to breaking the deadlock before halftime when he connected with a Madueke cross, only to send his header over the crossbar. England captain Harry Kane also threatened in stoppage time, but his effort was blocked by a wall of Ghanaian defenders as the teams headed into the break level.
Despite spending much of the opening period under pressure, Ghana showed glimpses of attacking intent. Antoine Semenyo used his physical strength to outmuscle James and surge into the penalty area, earning Ghana’s first corner and providing a reminder that the Black Stars remained dangerous on the break.
England intensified their pressure after the restart. Anthony Gordon and Djed Spence combined neatly on the left before Jude Bellingham set up Madueke, whose effort was blocked. Gordon pounced on the rebound, but goalkeeper Benjamin Asare gathered comfortably.
Asare continued to impress, dealing confidently with a low Kane effort from distance before watching Madueke fire over the bar following a scramble on the edge of the area.
Just when it appeared England were edging closer to a breakthrough, Ghana nearly produced the decisive moment of the match.
With a little over ten minutes remaining, Mohammed Fatawu launched a swift counterattack and released Prince Adu through on goal. Although the striker’s heavy touch allowed England’s defenders to recover, he still managed to poke a shot toward goal while falling. The effort struck Semenyo in front of goal before England eventually scrambled the danger away.
The Black Stars appealed for a penalty during the chaotic sequence after contact involving Ezri Konsa, but the referee waved play on
England pushed forward desperately in the closing stages. Bukayo Saka forced an excellent save from Asare in the 86th minute, while substitute Nico O’Reilly struck the crossbar moments later. The rebound fell kindly for Kane, but the veteran striker blazed his volley over from close range, wasting England’s best opportunity of the evening.
When the final whistle sounded, the Black Stars celebrated a result that could prove decisive in their quest to reach the knockout rounds.
The draw extends Ghana’s unbeaten start to the tournament and leaves the Black Stars on the brink of qualification ahead of their final group match against Croatia on June 27. Depending on other results, Ghana could even secure their place in the Round of 32 before kicking another ball.
