  • GSE Market Cap Hits GH¢292.06bn as Equities Extend Weekly Gains

The Ghana Stock Exchange extended its strong 2026 rally in the week ending July 24, with market capitalisation rising to GH¢292.06 billion as gains in selected large-cap and growth counters outweighed a sharp contraction in trading activity.

The benchmark GSE Composite Index closed the week at 15,330.57 points, up 2.63% from 14,937.92 points the previous week, lifting its year-to-date return to 74.80%. The GSE Financial Stocks Index also advanced marginally, rising 0.19% to 8,281.03 points and pushing its year-to-date return to 78.20%.

Market capitalisation increased from GH¢287.57 billion to GH¢292.06 billion, representing a weekly gain of GH¢4.49 billion, or 1.56%. The increase leaves the market less than GH¢8.00 billion away from the psychologically important GH¢300.00 billion mark, underscoring the scale of the equities rally that has defined trading on the local bourse this year.

Yet the headline rally came with a notable weakness: liquidity fell sharply. Total volume traded dropped by 61.92% to 11.51 million shares, from 30.24 million shares in the prior week. Total value traded fell even more steeply, declining by 87.02% to GH¢48.12 million, compared with GH¢370.67 million in the previous week.

This divergence between rising prices and falling turnover suggests that the market’s upward momentum remains intact, but trading depth weakened significantly during the week. In practical terms, the indices moved higher because investors continued to bid up selected counters, but the rally was supported by a smaller pool of transactions than the prior week.

ICT was the dominant sector by both volume and value traded. The sector recorded 4.55 million shares traded, representing 39.54% of total market volume, and GH¢30.66 million in value traded, equivalent to 63.70% of total market turnover.

The concentration was driven largely by MTN Ghana, which remained the most important counter on the exchange by activity. MTNGH alone recorded GH¢30.00 million in value traded, accounting for about 62.35% of total market turnover for the week. The stock also led volumes, with 4.40 million shares traded.

The stock closed the week at GH¢7.00, up from GH¢6.57, representing a weekly gain of 6.54%. Its year-to-date gain now stands at 66.67%, reinforcing MTNGH’s continued influence on market direction.

Food and beverage was the second-largest sector by value traded, with GH¢7.60 million, followed by finance with GH¢7.35 million. Distribution recorded GH¢1.09 million, while insurance, manufacturing, mining, agriculture and ETFs recorded lower trading values.

Kasapreko was the second-most active stock by value and volume, with GH¢6.74 million traded across 3.27 million shares. GCB followed on the value table with GH¢1.78 million, while Ecobank Ghana and CAL Bank recorded GH¢1.77 million and GH¢1.35 million respectively.

Together, the top five value-traded stocks MTNGH, KASA, GCB, EGH and CAL accounted for approximately GH¢41.63 million, or 86.51% of total weekly market turnover. This confirms that trading remained heavily concentrated in a small number of counters, even as the broader market recorded gains.

On the price movement table, Intravenous Infusions emerged as the week’s best performer, rising 57.14% to close at GH¢0.66. The stock’s year-to-date gain now stands at 1,220.00%, making it one of the most extraordinary price performers on the exchange this year.

Hords followed with a weekly gain of 44.44%, closing at GH¢0.26, while Clydestone rose 12.50% to GH¢4.50. Tullow Oil gained 9.98% to close at GH¢13.11, while Dannex Ayrton Starwin advanced 7.32%.

Other gainers included Republic Bank, Cocoa Processing Company, MTNGH, Ecobank Ghana, Societe Generale Ghana, GCB and Kasapreko. The average price change for the week stood at 6.72%, reflecting broad positive price momentum among the stocks that recorded changes.

On the downside, Atlantic Lithium was the worst performer, declining 17.26% to close at GH¢7.00. ZEN Petroleum Holdings Plc fell 9.09% to GH¢10.00, while ETI declined 4.83% to GH¢1.97. GOIL, Enterprise Group, Standard Chartered Bank and Benso Palm Plantation also recorded marginal weekly losses.

Daily trading patterns showed uneven activity across the week. Turnover value peaked on Tuesday, July 21, at GH¢19.35 million, before dropping to GH¢5.81 million on Wednesday and recovering to GH¢9.48 million on Thursday and GH¢10.88 million on Friday. Daily market capitalisation rose steadily from GH¢287.33 billion on July 20 to GH¢292.06 billion by July 24.

The week’s performance points to a market still being driven by momentum, but with signs of liquidity concentration. Strong gains in selected counters, especially MTNGH and smaller high-growth stocks, supported the indices and lifted market value. However, the sharp fall in turnover compared with the prior week suggests that investor participation was thinner.

For investors, the key message is that the GSE remains firmly bullish, but stock selection remains critical. The rally is not evenly distributed across all counters, and a significant portion of liquidity remains concentrated in MTNGH, Kasapreko and a few banking counters.

The approach towards GH¢300.00 billion in market capitalisation will likely remain the immediate psychological marker for the market. If large-cap counters sustain gains and liquidity improves, the exchange could cross that threshold in the near term.

But the deeper test is whether the market can broaden participation beyond a handful of dominant counters. For now, the GSE’s 2026 rally remains impressive, but the week’s data show that price strength is running ahead of trading depth.
