Energy Commission: 19 Laws passed to stop influx of substandard electrical appliances

The Energy Commission, established under the Energy Commission Act of 1997 (Act 541), has successfully implemented a series of regulations aimed at promoting the responsible utilization of energy resources in Ghana.

Pursuant to its mandate, the Commission has caused the passage of 19 laws by Parliament to regulate the markets for electrical appliances and renewable energy products.

The regulations, which serve to protect the economy, environment, health of citizens and consumers, aim to prevent the influx of substandard products, reduce the demand for electricity and its associated costs, mitigate the impact of increased power generation on the environment, and safeguard consumers from purchasing unsuitable appliances and incurring unnecessarily high electricity bills.

The Commission calls on all relevant parties, including importers and manufacturers of electrical appliances and renewable energy products, to take note of these regulations and their objectives.

The purpose of the Regulations is as  follows:

  1. To prevent Ghana from becoming a desirable destination for both new but substandard  and used appliances;
  2. To save the economy by reducing electricity demand which necessitates additional  generation capacity with its associated fuel cost;
  3. To protect the environment and safeguard the health of citizens from air pollution  caused by increased power generation; and
  4. To protect the consumer from purchasing unsuitable appliances and the payment of  unnecessarily high electricity bills.

The list of Regulations is as follows:
