England Retain EURO Title as Spain Falters in Penalty Shootout
England’s Lionesses have once again proven their resilience, defending their European crown by defeating Spain in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 final.
Chloe Kelly emerged as the hero, scoring the decisive penalty, while goalkeeper Hannah Hampton made two crucial saves during the shootout, leading England to a 3-1 victory from the spot. This victory not only secures England’s place atop European football but also serves as sweet revenge for their defeat to Spain in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final.
The match kicked off at St. Jakob-Park with both teams exchanging early chances, but it was the Lionesses who looked more threatening in the opening minutes. Alessia Russo and Lauren Hemp both forced Spanish goalkeeper Cata Coll into vital saves, showcasing England’s attacking intent.
However, Spain struck first, demonstrating their hallmark style. A seamless interplay between Aitana Bonmati and Athenea del Castillo set up Ona Batlle for a pinpoint cross, which Mariona Caldentey converted with a powerful header, leaving Hampton with no chance to save.
As the match progressed, Spain appeared to gain control, with Hampton again called into action to deny Bonmati and Caldentey from extending their lead.
