EPL: Arsenal Storm Back to Close Gap on Liverpool with 3-1 Victory Over Brentford

Arsenal showcased their resilience and determination as they defeated Brentford 3-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium on Wednesday, narrowing the gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool to just six points. The win marked a significant moment for Mikel Arteta’s side, who have been seeking to prove their title credentials in the early weeks of 2025.

The match began on a somber note for the Gunners when Bryan Mbeumo put Brentford ahead in the 13th minute. Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, making his first return to his former club, was under scrutiny from the home fans after a costly error.

A misplaced pass from Martin Ødegaard led to Mbeumo receiving the ball on the right flank. The Cameroonian forward cut inside and unleashed a low drive from 20 yards, which Raya failed to handle, allowing the ball to slip in at the near post.

Despite the early setback, Arsenal refused to be disheartened. They rallied back just before halftime, with Gabriel Jesus continuing his impressive scoring streak. In the 29th minute, Thomas Partey’s powerful shot was parried by Brentford’s keeper Mark Flekken, but Jesus was quick to react, diving in to head home the rebound, marking his sixth goal in four games after a sluggish start to the season.

The second half saw Arsenal’s momentum carry through as they quickly took control of the match. Just five minutes in, a corner taken by 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri caused chaos in the Brentford box. Flekken misjudged the delivery, and the ball fell to Mikel Merino, who slotted home his second goal for the club after his summer transfer from Real Sociedad.

Arsenal wasted no time in extending their lead further. Three minutes later, Nwaneri again showcased his talent, cutting back a pass that deflected into the path of Gabriel Martinelli. The Brazilian made no mistake, curling a beautiful finish past Flekken to put the Gunners firmly in command at 3-1.

This victory not only secured Arsenal’s place in second, above Nottingham Forest, but also underscored their unbeaten streak of 12 games across all competitions. The win came as a relief after a series of lackluster performances, including draws against Fulham and Everton, and a narrow win over Ipswich.

With star player Bukayo Saka sidelined for several months due to a hamstring injury, Nwaneri’s promising debut offered a glimpse into the future for Arsenal. Even in the absence of Kai Havertz, who scored the winner against Ipswich, Arsenal proved they have the depth and quality to compete at the highest level.
