EPL: Lisandro Martinez’s Late Goal Secures Narrow Victory for Man United Over Fulham
Manchester United edged past Fulham with a 1-0 victory thanks to a fortuitously deflected goal from Lisandro Martinez in the 78th minute. The win marked a much-needed boost for United under manager Ruben Amorim, as they climbed to 12th place in the Premier League standings.
The match drew an attendance of 27,288 fans, but the atmosphere was muted for much of the game as both teams struggled to create clear chances. United, in particular, appeared unadventurous, not registering a shot on target until the 42nd minute.
The total of just 13 shots for the match—seven for Fulham and six for United—was the lowest recorded in a Premier League game this season.
The breakthrough for United came late in the second half when Martinez, stationed at the edge of the box, unleashed a shot that took an unfortunate deflection off Fulham’s Sasa Lukic.
The ball looped over goalkeeper Bernd Leno, brushing his fingertips before finding the back of the net. The goal was not without controversy, as Martinez had escaped punishment earlier for a two-footed challenge on Fulham’s Adama Traore.
Fulham pressed for an equalizer, with Rodrigo Muniz missing a golden opportunity by shooting over from close range in stoppage time. The Cottagers came closest to leveling the score when Toby Collyer, a 21-year-old substitute, made a crucial defensive header off the line to deny Joachim Andersen’s attempt from a corner, earning him praise from his teammates.
Despite the lackluster performance, Amorim’s focus on securing points over aesthetics paid off, as this victory represented United’s fourth win in 12 Premier League matches.
The presence of Sir Jim Ratcliffe in the stands added an extra layer of significance to the day, as the club’s ownership continues to navigate its challenges.
