EPL: Liverpool Extends Lead at the Top; Tottenham Stages Home Victory Over United
Liverpool solidified their position at the top of the Premier League with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday. The win extended their lead to seven points, putting them in a strong position as they chase the title, while Tottenham Hotspur also found success, defeating Manchester United 1-0 to end a frustrating home run.
At Anfield, Liverpool started strong, with Luis Diaz opening the scoring in the 15th minute. The Colombian forward capitalized on a defensive error, bundling the ball into the net after a failed clearance from Toti Gomes. The Reds looked comfortable and doubled their lead when Mohamed Salah converted a penalty in the 37th minute, following a foul on Diaz by Wolves goalkeeper José Sá. This marked Salah’s 23rd league goal of the season, further cementing his status as the league’s leading scorer.
However, Wolves, desperate to escape the relegation zone, fought back in the second half. Matheus Cunha scored a stunning goal in the 67th minute, curling a low shot past Liverpool’s goalkeeper Alisson, igniting hopes of a comeback.
Despite some nervy moments, Liverpool held on for the win, taking their points tally to 60, while Wolves remained in 17th place with 19 points, just two above the drop zone.
Although Liverpool was far from their best, especially in a shaky second half, the victory provided a much-needed boost after a challenging week that included an FA Cup defeat and a last-minute equalizer from Everton in the league.
In another clash, Tottenham Hotspur ended their 105-day wait for a home league win with a 1-0 triumph over Manchester United, thanks to an early goal from James Maddison. The midfielder, back in the starting lineup after injury, tapped in a rebound from close range in the 13th minute, giving Spurs the lead in a match that showcased both teams’ vulnerabilities.
This victory was a significant relief for Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, as his team climbed above United into 12th place with 30 points. In contrast, United’s struggles continued under manager Ruben Amorim, who has now lost eight of his 14 Premier League matches since taking charge, leaving his side in 15th place with 29 points.
Despite having opportunities, including a golden chance for Alejandro Garnacho, United failed to capitalize, and Tottenham defended their lead resolutely. The home side enjoyed consecutive Premier League clean sheets for the first time in 16 months, marking a positive step amid ongoing challenges
