EPL: Liverpool Extends Lead to 13 Points as Forest Hold Arsenal to a Goalless Draw
Liverpool has opened a commanding 13-point lead at the top of the Premier League following a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United, while their closest rivals, Arsenal, could only manage a 0-0 draw against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday.
With this latest win, Liverpool appears to be on the brink of securing their 20th English league title. Goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister ensured the Reds emerged victorious against a Newcastle side that slipped to sixth place in the league standings.
Szoboszlai found the net in the 11th minute, firing home after a clever cutback from Luis Diaz. Mac Allister then doubled Liverpool’s advantage in the 63rd minute, expertly converting a pass from Mohamed Salah. This marked another impressive performance for a team that has navigated a challenging schedule, including a draw at Aston Villa and victories against Manchester City and Newcastle.
“The desire to win trophies is driving us on,” Mac Allister said after the match. “We know that this season we maybe have the opportunity to win some, so we’re really happy to work hard and hopefully keep on going.”
In contrast, Arsenal’s hopes of keeping pace in the title race took a hit as they failed to capitalize on their chances during a frustrating draw at Forest. Manager Mikel Arteta’s side, still reeling from a recent defeat to West Ham, now sits on 54 points, albeit with a game in hand.
Manchester City also made headlines, climbing back into the top four thanks to a solitary goal from Erling Haaland against Tottenham Hotspur. Haaland’s 12th-minute strike marked a significant achievement, making him only the second player to score at least 20 goals in each of his first three Premier League seasons.
Meanwhile, Manchester United secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over struggling Ipswich Town, despite being reduced to ten men. Harry Maguire’s late goal ensured a crucial win for United, who now find themselves in 14th place with 33 points.
Everton managed to extend their unbeaten run under manager David Moyes to seven games, drawing 1-1 with Brentford after Jake O’Brien scored his first goal for the club.
